The satellites rode up stacked flat inside the Falcon 9 Block 5 fairing and were released about 15 minutes after liftoff into a low parking orbit, a few hundred kilometres up — well below the roughly 550 km operational band. They separate gently, which is why a fresh batch stays bunched in a line for the first few days.

Each satellite then climbs to its assigned shell under its own power, using a low-thrust ion engine that moves it a few kilometres per day. The ascent takes weeks. Starting low is a deliberate safeguard: at that altitude atmospheric drag removes anything that fails checkout within months, so only satellites that prove they work reach an operational orbit.

Watching for the train after launch

Once Starlink Group 15-24 flies, its satellites will be worth looking for. In the first days after deployment they travel in a tight line along the same orbit, evenly spaced, and the effect is striking enough that it is the single most reported UFO sighting of recent years.

They are also unusually bright at that stage, for two reasons: they are still at the low parking altitude, much closer than the operational shells, and they have not yet settled into the attitude that SpaceX's brightness mitigations are designed around.

The ordinary visibility rules still apply — you need twilight, with the satellites sunlit while your own sky is dark. A train passing at midnight is inside Earth's shadow and invisible no matter how recently it launched.
